Embracing Optimum Living: My Journey as a Woman of Color

As March rolls in, bringing with it a fresh breath of spring and a celebration of women’s achievements, I reflect on my journey towards optimum living. As a woman of color, mother of seven adult children, author, wife, and leader, I’ve navigated various roles and responsibilities, each presenting its unique challenges and learnings. My path toward emotional wellness, purpose-driven life, and meaningful living has been anything but straightforward. During my last burnout twenty years ago, the essence of creating an optimum life began to unravel before me.

Burnout, a term we often hear yet sometimes fail to recognize until it’s knocking on our door, was my wake-up call. It was a reminder that living a life filled with purpose and meaning is not just about doing more but about being more and being more present, more aware, and more in tune with what truly matters. As a woman of color, the journey toward this realization was layered with societal expectations, cultural narratives, and personal ambitions. Yet, these very layers shaped my understanding of what optimum living truly means.

Optimum living, for me, is about embracing emotional wellness with open arms. It’s about understanding that my emotions are not a sign of weakness but a source of strength. They make me human, capable of experiencing the world fully. As I learned to navigate my emotions, I discovered the importance of self-care and the power of saying no to societal pressures, no to unrealistic standards, and no to anything that doesn’t serve my emotional well-being.

Living a purpose-driven life is another cornerstone of my journey. With each child I raised, a book I wrote, and the leadership role I took on, I was piecing together the puzzle of my purpose. It wasn’t about the titles or the accolades but about the impact I could make and the legacy I could leave behind. It was about finding joy in the simple moments and fulfillment in the challenges overcome.

Meaningful living, however, has been the most transformative aspect of my journey. It’s about creating moments that matter, not just for myself but for those around me. It’s about living intentionally and making choices that align with my values and beliefs. Whether sharing a meal with my family, mentoring young women, or writing inspiring words, each act is infused with meaning and purpose.

As we celebrate Women’s History Month, I am reminded of the resilience and strength of women everywhere. My journey towards optimum living is not just my own but a testament to the collective power of women who strive for emotional wellness, purpose-driven lives, and meaningful living. It’s a journey of self-discovery, resilience, and, most importantly, love.

To all the women embarking on their journey towards optimum living, remember, it’s not about reaching a destination but embracing the journey itself. It’s about finding your rhythm, your balance, and your peace. As a woman of color, mother, author, wife, and leader, I stand with you, ready to navigate this beautiful journey together.

Let us celebrate not just the achievements of women this March but the everyday moments of growth, challenge, and triumph. Here’s to living our most optimum life, one day at a time.
