Most of us hear self care when the word wellness comes to mind. All though self-care is a part of wellness it is only a fraction of the meaning.
What is wellness you may be asking? I like to define wellness as an active role we play in creating healthy habits in all areas (mental, relational, spiritual, physical and economical) of our life that promotes optimum living.
None of us can work on all dimensions of wellness at the same time, but we can have a starting point in our life. It is usually easier to begin with whatever needs the most improvement, or growth in our life.
The Dimensions of wellness
- Emotional
- Health/Physical
- Economic/financial
- Spiritual
- Social
- Environmental
- Relational
Here are five things you can do to start building or creating Wellness in your life.
- Commit to fully participating with the process
- Pick two or three areas that you would love to learn about more and begin to educate yourself.
- Find people you admire that are strong in those areas and ask questions, glean from them. Remember you are unique so everything may not work for you.
- Keep a journal to record your starting place, growth, challenges and discovery.
- Be realistic and patient, you are not going to do this overnight.
We have four seasons in our life that change without our permission. You will have seasons that require your attention in different areas of wellness and then rotate so you learn how have optimal results each time.
In this culture of rapid results, the great things in life still take time. You want to create lasting results not just reach a goal. This is not about a destination as much as it is about a journey.
Your pathway to wellness is unique to you and only you. ~Sybil F. Bull
